the day itself

what to expect

A meaningful journey into the arctic wilderness to experience the traditions of the Sámi, the indigenous people of Lapland. The day begins with a scenic drive north across snow-covered forests and open tundra to Kautokeino, Norway. Along the way, your guide shares insights into the region's landscape, wildlife, and cultural history. On arrival, you travel by sled through the tundra, watch wild reindeer in their natural surroundings, and learn about the traditional herding practices still carried on today. At the Sámi village, you're welcomed into a lavvu for a home-cooked meal by the fire, where storytelling comes alive with the ancient sounds of joik. You'll also learn their cultural meaning and way of life. The day ends with a gentle meeting with tamed reindeer, guided with care by Sámi families. An unforgettable day of culture, connection, and a deeper understanding of the Sámi way of life. We ask guests to follow the family's lead on what is and isn't for outsiders, this is their life, not a performance.
