arrival & stay
Where exactly is Sixty Eight North, and how do I get there?
We are located in Levi, Finnish Lapland, above the Arctic Circle. The nearest airport is Kittilä (KTT), just 25 minutes by road. Helsinki–Kittilä flights run daily in winter, and the journey from Helsinki takes around 1.5 hours. Airport transfers are included with your stay and we will take care of all the arrival details with you before you travel, so you can simply look out of the window and let Lapland do the rest.
What are the check-in and check-out times?
Check-in is from 15:00 and check-out is by 11:00. We know travel days can be unpredictable, so if you need to arrive a little earlier or linger a little longer, please just let us know and we will do our very best to make it work.
What is included in the stay?
Your stay includes breakfast, lunch, all non-alcoholic drinks, aurora alerts for the duration of your stay, and airport transfers. Dinner and experiences are available to add. Everything is shaped around your needs; just share your preferences and dietary requirements when you book and we will take care of the rest.
What is the best time of year to visit?
We are open from 1 December to 31 March, and honestly, every part of the season has something remarkable to offer. Early December brings the deep quiet of the first snow and the magic of Christmas in Lapland. January and February are the coldest and most atmospheric months, with long dark nights perfect for the aurora. March arrives with longer days, brilliant light on the snow, and a gentler pace. There is no wrong time to come; it simply depends on what calls to you. For a deeper look at each part of the season, read our full winter guide in the journal.
Is there a minimum stay requirement?
Yes, we have a minimum stay of two nights. In our experience, one night is never quite enough to feel the retreat properly. Two nights gives you the space to slow down, settle in, and truly feel the north. Many of our guests tell us they wish they had stayed longer.
Are pets allowed?
We are animal lovers at heart, especially dogs. But to protect guests with allergies and to maintain the quiet, clean environment of the retreat, we are unable to allow pets inside the cabins or the forest lodge. We hope you understand, and we look forward to welcoming you even if your four-legged friends have to sit this one out.
Is Sixty Eight North suitable for children?
By default, Sixty Eight North is designed as a quiet, adult-leaning retreat; the space is built for the deep quiet that most of our guests come north for. Children are warmly welcome on a full buyout of the retreat, or by special arrangement. If you are travelling with family, please contact us before booking and we will make sure everything is prepared with care for your whole family.
the cabins
What are the cabins like?
Each cabin is a handcrafted 50 m² forest cabin set privately in the forest. Inside: a king bed beneath twin skylights open to the night sky, a walk-in shower with heated floor, the stove kept warm, bathrobes, and everything you need for a quiet morning. Outside: a private forest garden with an open fire pit and reindeer skins on the chairs. Every detail has been chosen with care: natural materials, earth tones, OEKO-TEX certified linens. We want you to feel truly at home from the moment you arrive.
Why are the cabins scent-free? What does this mean in practice?
There are two reasons this matters deeply to us. First, many guests have fragrance allergies or sensitivities, and we want every stay to be comfortable and safe for everyone who walks through the door. Second, and just as importantly, our cabins are built entirely from 100% pine wood, a beautiful material, but one that is exceptionally porous and sensitive to odours. Scents absorb into the timber and linger stubbornly, no matter how thoroughly the cabin is cleaned. To protect both our guests and the integrity of the space, perfumes, colognes, essential oils, candles, incense, and strongly fragranced products are not permitted inside the cabins. We ask guests to use unscented or lightly fragranced personal care products during their stay. If you have any questions about this before you arrive, please do not hesitate to get in touch.
Can I cook in the cabin?
The cabins have a coffee machine with specialty beans, a kettle, a mini fridge, and ceramics for a quiet morning. Full cooking facilities are not available inside the cabins, and cooking appliances, open flames, and candles are not permitted. All meals are lovingly prepared and served at the lodge; just tell us your needs and we will shape every plate around you.
Can you cater for dietary requirements, allergies, or specific diets?
Absolutely; and this matters a great deal to us. Whether you are vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, dairy-free, or managing a specific allergy or intolerance, we will make sure every meal is prepared with care and full attention to your needs. We ask that you share your requirements when you book so we have time to plan properly. No request is too much; food is one of the ways we look after you, and we take that seriously.
Is there WiFi in the cabins?
Yes, WiFi is available in the cabins. That said, many of our guests find that once they are here, the forest and the dark sky make the question feel much less important. We hope you get the chance to find out for yourself.
What is the sauna and hot tub experience like?
The handcrafted forest sauna and outdoor hot tub are set at the edge of the wilderness; a fully private experience designed for stillness and deep relaxation. Sessions are two hours and entirely your own. We ask that guests do not use the facilities under the influence of alcohol, and that anyone who is pregnant or has a heart condition consults their doctor first. Full instructions and a warm welcome are provided on arrival.
What should we pack and wear for the cold?
Packing for a Finnish Lapland winter is something we feel strongly about; the right layers make the difference between a magical day in the snow and a cold, uncomfortable one. As a general rule, merino wool base layers, a good mid layer, and a windproof outer will carry you through most conditions. Thermal socks, waterproof boots, and a warm hat are essential. We also provide technical outerwear for activities. For a full and honest packing guide written specifically for a stay with us, read our journal post on what to pack for a Lapland winter.
experiences
What kind of experiences can we do in Levi, Finnish Lapland?
We offer a wide range of private and small-group experiences, from [snowshoeing](/experiences/gentle-forest-snowshoeing/), [husky sledding](/experiences/husky-sledding/), snowmobile safaris, [ice fishing](/experiences/ice-fishing-frozen-lake/), horse riding and reindeer farm visits, to forest dining in a traditional Lappish kota, Sámi-led cultural experiences, and wellness sessions including private sauna, yoga, sound meditation, and massage. Every experience is arranged entirely around your group; no shared minibuses, no fixed itineraries, just the north at your own pace.
Do you offer help with flights or travel planning?
Yes; and we genuinely love doing this. We can help you plan and customise your stay from A to Z: flights, transfers, experiences, dining, special arrangements and everything in between. Just write to us at [email protected] and tell us a little about what you are dreaming of. We will take it from there.
Are the experiences private, or shared with other guests?
Almost all of our experiences are fully private: your guide, your pace, your group only. A small number, such as husky sledding and horse riding, may run in small groups. We believe the north is best experienced personally and at your own rhythm, and we design every day with that in mind.
What if weather prevents an activity?
Finnish Lapland's conditions are part of what makes it so extraordinary, but they are not always predictable, and we completely understand how disappointing a change of plan can feel. We will always do our best to offer a suitable alternative or reschedule. If an activity is cancelled for safety reasons and no alternative is possible, a credit may be offered. We encourage all guests to hold comprehensive travel insurance and to arrive with open hearts; the north has a way of offering something unexpected and wonderful in return.
How do the Sámi experiences work?
We live and work on land within the traditional homeland of the Sámi people. The Sámi-led experiences in our catalogue, including In the Footsteps of the Sámi, a full day in Kautokeino, Norway, are hosted by families who welcomed us in with open arms. We feel deeply privileged to share these moments with our guests, and we ask that all who take part do so with the same respect and care with which they were offered.
northern lights
Can you guarantee the Northern Lights?
Honestly, no; and we would never want to promise what only nature can give. The aurora borealis is a wild and beautiful phenomenon that cannot be guaranteed by anyone. What we can offer is the very best conditions for seeing them: zero light pollution across 78 hectares of private forest, skylights above your bed, a complimentary aurora alert via Northern Lights Alert for the length of your stay, and a northern lights hunting experience by car on request. Levi is one of Europe's finest locations for aurora sightings; we will do everything we can, and then we watch the sky together.
When is the best time to see the Northern Lights in Levi?
The aurora season in Finnish Lapland runs from late August through to April, with the most active periods around the equinoxes in September–October and February–March. The best conditions need clear, dark skies and a willing sun; and we will be watching alongside you. Our complimentary aurora alert via Northern Lights Alert means you will never miss a window, even in the quiet hours of the night.
What is polar night, and does it affect the stay?
In Levi, the sun stays below the horizon for several weeks around the winter solstice, a phenomenon known as kaamos, or polar night. Rather than true darkness, the sky fills with the most extraordinary shades of blue, pink, and amber during the brief midday hours. It is one of those things you have to see to believe, and many of our guests tell us it becomes the most quietly transformative part of their whole stay.
special occasions
Can we arrange a proposal, wedding, or celebration at Sixty Eight North?
Yes; and we would be truly honoured to be part of it. Whether you are planning a proposal under the aurora, an intimate wedding in the forest, a honeymoon, a milestone birthday, or any celebration that deserves something extraordinary, we will work with you to make it everything you imagined. The setting does a great deal of the work; and we will take care of the rest. Write to us at [email protected] and let us know what you are dreaming of.
Can you arrange surprise elements for a special trip?
Yes, absolutely; and these are some of our favourite things to plan. From a surprise candlelit dinner in the forest, a private aurora hunt, a bottle of champagne waiting in the cabin, or something entirely bespoke, we love creating moments that catch people off guard in the best possible way. Just get in touch ahead of your arrival and tell us what you have in mind. The more detail you share, the more magical we can make it.
booking & policy
How do I book, and when is payment due?
Bookings can be made via our online booking page or by writing to us at [email protected]. We love hearing from people who are dreaming of coming north. Full payment is required to confirm a reservation and the lead guest must be 18 or over. Once you are booked, we will be in touch to start planning your stay together.
What is the cancellation policy?
We understand that life does not always go to plan. If you need to cancel 120 days or more before arrival, we retain 30% of the total booking value. If you cancel less than 120 days before arrival, 100% is retained. Date changes are treated as cancellations. No refunds apply for late arrival, early departure, or no-show. We strongly encourage all guests to hold comprehensive travel insurance, for exactly these moments.
Do I need travel insurance?
Yes, and we ask this out of genuine care for you. Given our remote Arctic location and the nature of activities available, we require all guests to hold comprehensive travel insurance covering trip cancellation, medical emergencies, adventure activities, and travel disruption. We want you to arrive with peace of mind, knowing that whatever the journey throws at you, you are covered.
Can I bring additional guests not on the booking?
We are a small and deeply private retreat, and we ask that only registered guests are present during a stay. If your group size changes before arrival, please just let us know as soon as possible and we will do our best to accommodate. We want every guest to feel that this place was made for them; and that means keeping things intimate and considered.
What medical information should I share before arriving?
Please share any medical conditions, allergies, or mobility considerations with us before you arrive, particularly if you are planning to use the sauna or hot tub. We are in a remote location and the more we know, the better we can look after you. Everything you share is treated with complete discretion and handled in full accordance with GDPR.
Can I film or take photographs for social media or commercial use?
Personal photography is warmly encouraged; this is one of the most beautiful places on earth and we want you to carry it home with you. For professional photography, filming, drone use, or commercial and influencer content creation, we ask for prior written approval. Please reach out before your stay and we will do our very best to work something out together.
