when to book a lapland holiday.
Planning a winter trip to Finnish Lapland is less about when to travel, and more about when to book. The season is short, the cabins are few, and the best places fill first. A practical guide to booking windows, the Christmas pinch, and why early matters here.

Planning a winter trip to Finnish Lapland is less about when to travel, and more about when to book.
Lapland has a short season. Most stays run between December and March, and availability is limited, especially for private cabins and smaller retreats.
The earlier you book, the more choice you have.
how far in advance to book lapland
For a winter holiday in Lapland, we recommend booking:
- 12 to 18 months in advance for December and Christmas stays
- 9 to 12 months in advance for January and February
- 6 to 9 months in advance for March
The closer you get to the season, the more limited the options become, particularly in places like Levi in Finnish Lapland.
why booking early matters
Lapland is not built for volume.
There are a limited number of cabins, guides, and experiences available each season. Once they are booked, they are gone.
Flights to Kittilä Airport also become more expensive as winter approaches, especially during peak travel periods.
Booking early allows you to choose where you stay, how your days are structured, and which experiences are available.
a private retreat with limited availability
At Sixty Eight North, near Levi in Finnish Lapland, we operate as a private boutique retreat with a limited number of cabins.
We do not scale, and we do not increase capacity during the season. Each stay is spaced, private, and intentionally quiet.
Because of this, availability is limited, and many of our guests secure their dates well in advance, particularly for December and peak winter months.
christmas and peak season in lapland
December, especially the Christmas period, is the first to fill.
Many guests plan their Lapland Christmas holiday a year or more in advance. Availability is limited across Finnish Lapland, including Levi and Rovaniemi.
If you are considering Lapland at Christmas, early booking is essential.
january to march, more flexibility but still limited
Outside of Christmas, there is slightly more flexibility, but demand remains strong.
January offers deep winter conditions.
February and March are often the most balanced months for snow, light, and Northern Lights viewing.
Even in these months, the best cabins and quieter retreats tend to book early.
in simple terms
- Lapland winter is short
- Availability is limited
- The best places book first
If you are planning a winter stay in Finnish Lapland, securing your accommodation early ensures you have access to the experience you are looking for.
